Humans asking for it

KOLKATA: A day's respite is all that Rani, Babu, Debu and Pappu got. When visitors returned to the zoo on Friday morning after the weekly closure, they were back to tormenting the four chimpanzees, hurling stones into their enclosure. Debu retaliated in kind, picking up the stones and hurling them back at the visitors.

Though zoo authorities deployed additional security and scouts to manage misbehaving visitors, efforts to prevent ugly incidents went in vain as people began pelting stones at the chimps.

"We had removed all stones from the enclosure to prevent trouble, but the crowd pelted the primates with oranges and made bizarre gestures. The chimps didn't react, but then a group of boys began throwing stones at them. That's when Debu retaliated," zoo director S K Choudhuri said.
