City at wits' end over 'Simian menace' - 25 Oct 2007 - NZ Herald: World / International News
In certain parts of India the problem has become such that the authorities have been forced to undertake special steps to confront what the local papers call "the Simian menace".

In Delhi, officials have even constructed a "monkey prison" in the south of the city where animals that are captured on the streets of the capital are put in cages and then delivered to the walled sanctuary and released.

Some local communities have got together and hired men with larger, more aggressive langur monkeys to scare away the rhesus monkeys. Several years ago the federal Government even put some of the langurs on its payroll, paying them around $19 a month in bananas to patrol the areas around some of the government departments. The authority that runs the city's recently opened subway also resorted to hiring langurs to clear away the smaller monkeys who were following commuters on to the trains.

More monkey business

Kenyan officials are not sure how to handle a troop of rude monkeys that's been making lewd gestures at women, London's Daily Telegraph reports. "Can the [tourism] minister deploy game rangers ... to deal with the monkey menace?" pleaded local representative Paul Muite in Kenya's national parliament last month, to accompanying laughter. "These creatures have clearly shown that they have no respect for women."[Article.]

Maybe the monkeys need to be sent to sensitivity school and forced to watch Steel Magnolias and read Marge Piercy's poetry until they see the light.

GAUHATI, India — Six Asiatic wild elephants were electrocuted as they went berserk after drinking rice beer in India's remote northeast, a wildlife official said Tuesday.

Nearly 40 elephants came to a village on Friday looking for food. Some found beer, which farmers ferment and keep in plastic and tin drums in their huts, said Sunil Kumar, a state wildlife official.

They got drunk, uprooted a utility pole carrying power lines and were electrocuted in Chandan Nukat, a village nearly 150 miles west of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya state, Kumar said.
