Brideshead revisited revisited

A leading independent school believes the only proper way to prepare its pupils for the real world is to teach them how to waltz and set a table.

The basic etiquette classes have been introduced at fee-paying Brighton College after surveys showed some graduates were impolite.

Year nine boys and girls receive instruction on practical matters to equip them better for "civilised society", its headmaster said.

Pupils are being invited each week to a lunch or dinner in the headmaster's house where they are taught basic etiquette such as whether they may remove they jackets, which cutlery to use and how to deal with food they dislike.

In addition, the so-called "How to..." lessons will also teach pupils how to iron a shirt, lay a table, reply to an invitation, tie a bow tie and even how to waltz.
